Baby Smurf 👶💙
Baby Smurf is the adorable little blue baby of the Smurf Village. With his round cheeks, big smile, diaper, and endless curiosity, Baby Smurf quickly became one of the most beloved younger members of the Smurf family.
Unlike most Smurfs, Baby Smurf has a very unusual arrival story. According to the 1980s cartoon, he mysteriously appears in the village during a blue moon, delivered by a stork. Even the Smurfs don't completely understand where baby Smurfs come from!
Baby Smurf first appeared in the original comic story The Baby Smurf (Le Bébé Schtroumpf) and later became a particularly important character in the classic 1980s animated series. He also appears in the modern 2021 CGI series.
Facts about Baby Smurf
👶 He arrived during a blue moon. In the classic cartoon, Papa Smurf explains that a baby Smurf appears only “once in a blue moon.” One night, a stork arrives carrying Baby Smurf and leaves him at the Smurf Village.
💙 His arrival is treated as a great mystery. When Brainy asks Papa Smurf where baby Smurfs come from, Papa admits that he doesn't really know. He explains that once in a blue moon, a baby Smurf simply appears for everyone to love.
⚖️ His original delivery notice was extremely specific. When the stork later returns with a letter, the notice identifies Baby Smurf as blue, weighing two ounces, wearing a white diaper, and having a silver pin.
🕊️ The stork made a delivery mistake. The letter explains that Baby Smurf was delivered to the village by mistake and should be returned to the carrier. The Smurfs, however, become so attached to him that they refuse to give him back.
😤 Even Grouchy Smurf becomes attached to him. Grouchy initially insists that he hates babies, but Baby Smurf gradually brings out a much softer side of him. Their relationship is one of the sweetest surprises in the Baby Smurf story.
⏳ Baby Smurf's baby stage lasts a very long time. In the classic cartoon, Papa Smurf jokes that Baby's troublesome baby behavior lasts for about 150 years. That's quite a long diaper-changing phase!
Baby Smurf's Arrival
🌕 Once in a Blue Moon
Baby Smurf's arrival is one of the strangest traditions in Smurf Village.
During a blue moon, a stork flies into the village carrying a tiny baby Smurf. The Smurfs are immediately fascinated and pass the baby from one Smurf to another until he ends up with Smurfette.
The entire village quickly becomes involved in caring for him.
Handy Smurf builds a special bed, Greedy Smurf tries to prepare food, and Smurfette takes a particularly strong interest in looking after the new arrival.
Even Grouchy, who claims to dislike babies, eventually finds himself enjoying Baby's company.
Baby Smurf's First Word
🗣️ His first word was “Gargamel”!
One of the most unusual Baby Smurf traditions is the First Word Ceremony.
In the classic cartoon, Baby is placed on a mushroom in the Blue Clearing. At midnight, a magical moonbeam shines onto the mushroom and Baby says his very first word.
According to Papa Smurf, a baby's first word can give the Smurfs a small glimpse into that child's future.
Baby Smurf's first word turns out to be:
“Gargamel.”
Papa Smurf interprets this as a sign that Baby may one day become a great leader who knows how to recognize his enemies.
Baby Smurf and Smurfette
🌼 Smurfette quickly becomes one of Baby's closest caregivers.
When Baby first arrives in the village, Smurfette is the first Smurf to welcome him after several Smurfs deny that the baby belongs to them.
She treats Baby almost like a mother would care for a little child and becomes very protective of him.
Their relationship is especially important in several animated stories, where Smurfette repeatedly tries to keep Baby safe from danger.
🥋 Baby even inspires Smurf-Fu adventures.
In the modern CGI series, Smurfette is teaching Smurf-Fu when Baby watches her training.
She becomes convinced that Baby may secretly possess the wisdom of a great Smurf-Fu master. His innocent baby noises are interpreted as mysterious instructions, sending Smurfette and her students on an amusing adventure.
Baby Smurf and Grouchy
😠 Grouchy says he hates babies… but Baby changes him.
Grouchy Smurf initially wants nothing to do with Baby.
However, Baby's cheerful personality gradually wins him over.
In the classic story, Grouchy secretly enjoys spending time with Baby even while pretending that he doesn't care. Baby's ability to soften Grouchy is one of the recurring themes surrounding the character.
Baby Smurf and Gargamel
🧙 Baby has even brought out Gargamel's softer side.
Gargamel normally wants nothing more than to capture the Smurfs.
But Baby Smurf is different.
In the 1980s episode Baby's First Word, Gargamel captures Baby and unexpectedly ends up behaving almost like a father. He feeds him, plays with him, changes his diapers, and eventually puts him to sleep.
For a short time, Baby manages to bring out a surprisingly gentle side of the usually evil wizard.
Of course, Gargamel eventually returns to his usual plans!

📚 The Baby Smurf was published in 1984.
The original French comic story is called Le Bébé Schtroumpf.
It was published as the 12th album of the original Smurfs comic series in October 1984.
The album contains 47 pages and includes four stories:

The Baby Smurf story is therefore one of the early major appearances of Baby in Smurf comic history.
Baby Smurf in the 1980s Cartoon

Even while the other Smurfs age dramatically, Baby does not suddenly grow taller. Instead, he only shows signs of aging such as wrinkles.
This makes Baby Smurf one of the unusual exceptions to the normal aging effects seen in the story.

The modern CGI series continues to use Baby Smurf as a recurring character.
